Is Daniel Radcliffe hoping to replace Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in a reboot of the superhero franchise? That’s the claim in one of this week’s tabloids. Gossip Cop looked into the rumor and we’ve learned the truth.
A headline in the latest issue of Star reads, “Scrawny Daniel’s Wolverine Dreams.” The accompanying article says the Harry Potter star wants to follow in Jackman’s footsteps as the X-Men character, despite being significantly smaller than the fellow actor. A supposed source tells the magazine, “Hugh is done with Wolverine, and Disney thinks it’s poised for a remake, so Dan is determined to get the part.”
The magazine goes on to say that Radcliffe has been hitting the gym in an effort to get into shape for the role. “He’s actually been working out like crazy for the last few years so he could land more leading-man roles and fewer indie flicks,” adds the supposed source. “You wouldn’t believe it, but Daniel looks like a bodybuilder with his shirt off!”
The tabloid’s article is based on claims from an anonymous and seemingly nonexistent “source,” but Gossip Cop checked in with Radcliffe’s spokesperson, who tells us on the record it’s simply “not true.” Despite what the magazine’s untraceable “source” says, a rep qualified to speak on the actor’s behalf assures us he isn’t on a quest to become the next Wolverine.
It’s worth noting, the Harry Potter star has in fact expressed interest in playing a superhero, but it wasn’t Wolverine. In a 2016 interview with Metro, Radcliffe said, “I would’ve been a good Spider-Man but the boat has sailed on that.” Spider-Man’s alter ego, high school student Peter Parker, is much more diminutive in stature than Wolverine, a physically-enhanced mutant with an exoskeleton made of medal. Radcliffe already acknowledged which superhero he’s best suited to play, and it wasn’t Wolverine.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time we’ve had to debunk a bogus story surrounding Jackman’s retirement from the X-Men role. Earlier this year, Gossip Cop called out Star’s sister publication, the National Enquirer, for falsely claiming that Jackman planned to quit the gym and get fat because he was done playing Wolverine. Of course, he’s not done being a movie star, so the story made little sense. Not only has the actor remained in great shape since hanging up his claws, but Jackman is embarking on world concert tour next year, performing songs from his hit movie musicals.
