August 1 is National Girlfriends Day–a day that comes around once a year, and platonic, female friends from all over celebrate one another. Yet, this year is different. Queer women have taken up the hashtag #NationalGirlfriendsDay to ask heterosexual women to stop using the word “girlfriend” when referencing their friends.

One Twitter user suggested they use “human friends” or “true friends” instead.

“I do wish hetero women would stop referring to platonic friends as ‘girlfriends’ because every time you do that I’m like ‘oooh, hello fellow non-monogamous lesbian’ and it makes things awkward,” she wrote.

33-year-old Maxim Gareyev admitted to stabbing Karaglanova “at least five times in the neck and chest” at her Moscow apartment.

“She told me that I was ugly and that even plastic (surgery) would not help me,” he says in the video. “I could not stand it.”

Gareyev says he had an intimate relationship with Karaglanova and would give her money when they met up, as reported by BBC. During the argument preceding Karaglanova’s murder, Gareyev says she told him it would take a year for him to save enough money for them to meet again.

Karaglanova had entered a new relationship and planned a trip to the Netherlands in celebration of her 25 birthday on July 30, according to Moscow newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets.

“In 2014 we swept 4 out of 5 Best Staircase awards from the Stairway Manufacturers’ Association, the organization of the leading stair builders in North America,” the website says.

It’s no wonder that this company’s products are winning awards. Katzoff’s company employs a staff of 25, which makes everything by hand and don’t rely on machinery.

Some of the staircases are so ornate and take so long to make (as many as 11,000 hours!), they cost upwards of seven figures, Seattle Magazine says. This makes the bathtubs pretty reasonably priced, right?

NK Woodworking spends three to four months on each custom tub it creates, Katzoff told the magazine. You certainly get what you pay for!

He also said the company is debuting a line of ready-made wood furniture, including tables, chairs and more.

Katzoff said one thing the company will never do is share photos that take place during a product’s build.

“At the Kitchen and Bath Industry Show in Orlando, literally everyone at the show said the best thing was the bathtubs,” he told The Seattle Times. “Lots of people were trying to dissect our process, and we got paranoid.”

We don’t blame him for wanting to keep his plans close to the vest! His works are so special and unique, we’d hate to see them mass-produced.

If you’ve ever seen a news story about the tragic death of a child who was left inside of a hot vehicle and thought, “I can see how that happens,” you are not alone.

It’s an uncomfortable thought and not one that is often expressed openly. When these tragedies makes headlines, many people will judge the person who left the child in the car for being careless or mindless. How could they have made such a fatal mistake?

But it happens. In the first seven months of 2019, there were 24 children killed due to being left in a hot vehicle.

In July, a social worker in New York City and his wife lost their 1-year-old twins, Luna and Phoenix, after they were left inside their father’s vehicle while he was at work.

Juan Rodriguez said he thought he had dropped them off at their daycare provider and is in disbelief that he didn’t realize he had not.

But Rodriguez is certainly not the only person to have done this, and science says it can truly happen to anyone. David Diamond, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of South Florida, said it is often a memory lapse and not negligence.

“It’s a matter of circumstances,” Diamond told Consumer Reports. “It can happen to everyone.”

In Rodriguez’s case, he has been charged with two counts of manslaughter, two counts of criminally negligent homicide and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Those charges came after he called the police upon discovering he had left the twins in their rear-facing car seats. (He pleaded not guilty on July 28.)

The twins were there from 8 a.m. through 4 p.m., Rodriguez’s entire work shift. When discovered, Luna and Phoenix were still strapped into their car seats, not breathing.

As of Aug. 1, 2019, a grand jury had not heard the case against Rodriguez, and his attorney is hopeful the charges will be dropped.

Rodriguez’s wife is standing by her husband, and said the incident is a horrible accident. “I will never get over this loss, and I know he will never forgive himself for this mistake,” Marissa Rodriguez told NBC News. “This was a horrific accident, and I need him by my side to go through this together.”

Following the tragic incident, Diamond spoke to Rodriguez to offer him what little comfort he may possibly find in his state of grief: That hundreds of people have done the same thing in the past two decades.

The psychologist says that when people do the same thing day after day — such as drive the same route — they tend to go on autopilot. They get into a habitual state, but it is one that suppresses a part of the consciousness that sometimes requires people to need a cue to come back to full consciousness, and remember what they plan to do.

Memory lapses are often fueled by stress and sleep deprivation, Diamond told the New York Times.

It is likely the temperature inside Rodriguez’s car rose to 120 degrees in just half an hour.

When the twins were found dead, their body temps had risen to 108 degrees. That’s enough to cause organs to shut down.

A group called Kids and Cars is tracking hot vehicle deaths and says more than 900 children have died in this manner since 1990.

The rise in hot car deaths throughout the past few decades has spurred ideas for helping folks to remember that there are children in the rear of their vehicles.

One idea is the have caregivers send alerts to the guardians or parents when the child doesn’t show up to daycare or school.

Even Congress is working on a solution to prevent these tragic deaths. The Hot Cars Act of 2019 is in the works now and will require mandatory technology that reminds drivers to check their back seats.

Not all hot car deaths are because of a mental lapse, though. NoHeatStroke.org reports many happen on purpose, or because a child climbed into a vehicle on their own and a care provider was unaware. Between 1998 and 2018, 44 percent of 795 children who died inside a hot car had been forgotten.

It’s ultimately up to local authorities to decide whether to press charges against caregivers who forget children inside vehicles.

If you’re often driving children to the same place day after day, please stay more aware. Don’t let the daily routine cause a memory lapse.

Woodstock 2019 turned to be a total disaster

The Woodstock 50 festival, which in its planning stages has been plagued by a series of misfortunes and obstacles, will not go on as planned.

“We are saddened that a series of unforeseen setbacks has made it impossible to put on the Festival we imagined with the great line-up we had booked and the social engagement we were anticipating,” said Michael Lang, co-founder of the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. “We thank the artists, fans and partners who stood by us even in the face of adversity.”

The festival had been scheduled to take place August 16 to 18 to celebrate Woodstock’s 50th Anniversary but the tickets never went on sale.

Jay-Z pulled out of the festival just days ago, as did musician John Fogerty. Miley Cyrus, Santana, Dead & Company (featuring John Mayer and members of the Grateful Dead), Country Joe McDonald (of Country Joe and the Fish), Pussy Riot, John Fogerty (of Creedence Clearwater Revival), Chance the Rapper, and Jack White’s The Raconteurs dropped out this past week.

The cancellation brings to a conclusion a messy saga that began earlier this year.

In April, a marketing firm that was financing the festival opted to pull out, with executives telling festival organizers that they were canceling the event.

But organizers, including promoter Lang, one of the creators of the original festival in 1969, said it wasn’t up to the firm to cancel the festival, and they trudged on.

Last month, festival officials announced that the scheduled venue for Woodstock 50, Watkins Glen International, had pulled out.

New plans were later made to hold the festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland instead of the previously scheduled site in New York.

Calvin Ball, the county executive for Howard County, where the pavillion is located, said in a statement he shared “in the disappointment of everyone who hoped to celebrate the anniversary of ‘Peace & Music’ with a festival this summer.”

At one point, some of the music industry’s biggest names were announced as headliners, including Miley Cyrus and Chance the Rapper. Artists who performed at the original Woodstock, like Santana and David Crosby, were also set to perform.

Newly released bodycam footage captured the final moments of  Tony Timpa’s life. Dallas Police Officers pinned Timpa down–and as he fell into unconsciousness, they began making jokes. Moments later he was dead.

According to Dallas Morning News, Timpa called 911 for help from a local store, telling them that he suffered from both schizophrenia and depression. He had taken drugs, was off his mental health medication, and was afraid, he allegedly told them.

In the footage, officers can be heard trying to convince Timpa–who was already handcuffed by a security guard prior to the police arrival–to stay on the ground. When Timpa doesn’t comply, they pin him down by his shoulders, knees, and neck.

“You’re gonna kill me,” Timpa repeatedly says, while asking the officers to release him.

Eventually, Timpa fell into unconsciousness, but police never checked his pulse to confirm if he was breathing or perform CPR. Instead, they joked that he was merely asleep and that they should wake him up and make him waffles for breakfast. They can be heard laughing in the footage.

At least four minutes passed before CPR was administered by the paramedics who arrived on the scene. After an assessment, the first responder tells the officers that Timpa was not breathing.

“Oh shit,” one officer can be heard saying.

The video was released after a three-year fight by the city to keep it under wraps. On Monday, a judge ruled in favor of a motion put forth by news outlets Dallas Morning News and NBC5 to release records regarding Timpa’s death.

“The public has a compelling interest in understanding what truly took place during a fatal exchange between a citizen and law enforcement,” the judge said.

An autopsy revealed Timpa’s death was a homicide caused by cardiac arrest due to “the toxic effects of cocaine and the stress associated with physical restraint.”

Three officers involved–Kevin Mansell, Danny Vasquez, and Dustin Dillard–were indicted by a grand jury in 2017 on charges of misdemeanor deadly conduct. The charges were dismissed in March of 2019, and the officers returned to active duty in April.

That said, the Holloween confection sounds delicious! Judging by the fact that the twins who run the account are junk food experts who have dedicated their entire account to “exploring everything new, rare or interesting” in the junk food world, we trust their opinions.

“For chocolate lovers such as ourselves, this easily beats many m&m flavors out right now (although peanut butter m&m’s will remain our top favorite),” their Instagram post states. “The dark chocolate is rich and a little bitter as dark chocolate should be, and the cocoa crisp is satisfying.”

M&M’s rolls out several new flavors each year that we patiently look forward too. Last year they blessed us with three fun fall flavors including White Pumpkin Pie, Ghoul’s Mix and White Candy Corn.

Any of them might go well in this simple recipe, shown in a video by Instagrammer @neuroticmom. It requires just pretzel snaps, a meltable chocolate candy such as Hershey’s Kisses or Hugs, and M&Ms in your favorite flavors or colors. You probably already have these three things in your kitchen, right?

Simply top the pretzel snap with a chocolate, pop it in the oven for seven minutes at 200°, and put some seasonal M&Ms on top. She did a July 4th holiday version, but you could definitely switch it up for Halloween! The recipe is posted here.
