Vivid’s classic porn holds up even when its website doesn’t

is vivid worth it

If you ever watched porn on VHS or DVD, you probably know the name Vivid. Launched in 1984, Vivid has released thousands of full-length porn films, spanning almost every genre outside of gay porn. Of course, it’s easy to survive off your glory days, but how has Vivid handled the transition into the future? While the company still makes a large chunk of its business from physical media, it also has a full streaming site. Is Vivid.com worth your hard-earned dollars? Here’s everything you need to know about a Vivid membership, from cost to features to where the site has room to grow.

VISIT VIVID

When it comes to paying for porn, you’ll always get the best deal buying a long term membership. There are few companies that’s truer for than Vivid. It has a much higher per month base price than most mainstream porn sites, starting at $33.97. However, when you buy three months at once for $59.97, the monthly price drops to just $19.99. The absolute best deal is one year for $119.97, an average $10 per month billed all at once. If you’re going to pay for two months, just go ahead and get three. Given Vivid’s library of content, it will probably take you a while to look through everything anyway.

Vivid membership benefits

1) Vast collection of porn stars

Vivid has been in business for over 30 years, producing new content at a steady pace the whole time. The hard work is your reward, leading to Vivid.com having one of the most historically reflective catalogs of porn online. You’ll find movies from the ’90s through today, featuring the biggest stars of almost every moment since the early 2000s. Jenna Jameson, Asia Carrera, Riley Ried, Heather Hunter, Chasey Laine, Lexi Belle, and more grace the pages of Vivid.com. If there’s a porn star you remember from years past who’s always stuck in your mind, there’s a good chance you’ll find them here.

2) Thousands of videos across multiple sites

It’s impossible to get bored on Vivid.com thanks to its seemingly endless library spanning decades of content. However, the company doesn’t rest on its laurels. Every single day, Vivid uploads a brand new clip, a pace matched by almost no other site in the industry. Subscribers also get 11 subsites of extra content to enjoy. These sites are themed around everything from classic porn to big butts to lesbians. What the site lacks in originality, it makes up for in quantity.

3) Full DVDs

Once upon a time, porn companies’ bread and butter were physical media like VHS and DVDs. Relive those glory days of themed porn features with Vivid’s online DVD collection. While the site itself is full of various individual scenes from its movie catalog, the DVD collection groups full movies together. And each scene is available individually, so you don’t have to waste time skipping around.

4) Diverse casting

While there is always room to grow, Vivid has a surprisingly diverse casting history for a company that’s been around 30 years. Admittedly, the diversity of the early days was seriously lacking. But in the last decade, it has dramatically improved. While there are still some cringe-worthy moments, Vivid’s interracial content doesn’t always rely on racist cliches and stereotypes.

5) Wide range of genres

Vivid offers a little bit of everything for its viewers—with the exception of water sports and gay men. From orgies to parodies, the site has something to scratch any heteronormative itch. This is very traditional “male gaze” porn, but it’s still high quality traditional “male gaze” porn. More importantly, because of the massive timeline of porn covered, Vivid shows you how these genres have evolved over the years. Who knew a porn site could be educational?

6) Celebrity sex tapes

Celebrity sex tapes are wildly popular, taping into the most voyeuristic aspects of our culture for thrills. There’s no other porn site on Earth that offers as many celebrity sex tapes as Vivid, which has actually worked out the rights to these movies. While some of them are staged and some are actual sex tapes, the parties in each tape have to sign off legally for the tape to be released. Vivid owns the rights to each of these tapes and allows subscribers to stream them whenever they want. Unlike the other content on Vivid.com, however, these sex tapes can’t be downloaded.

Vivid membership cons

1) Celebrity sex tapes

Celebrity sex tapes suck. Pamela Anderson hates that her tape was leaked. For every person who had a moment in the sun from a sex tape, there’s another who only signed the release because the tape would be leaked anyway. They might as well profit off them. I get why they are sold and have watched them myself in the past. It’s not something I’m proud of. For many people, it’s a selling point, but as a reviewer, I would be lying to pretend it’s not something that bothers me.

2) Missing key classic content

One of the biggest selling points of Vivid’s site is its classic content. Vivid was one of the most important studios in porn during the ’90s and early ’00s, but while some this legacy content is present online, tons of it is missing. Only six Asia Carrera scenes and four Heather Hunter scenes compared to twenty-six with Jenna Jameson? When a company brags about being one of the biggest brands in porn for 30 years, it’s bonkers to skimp on content from the biggest ’90s stars.

3) Some network sites no longer update

While your Vivid membership gets you access to 11 network sites, almost none of them regularly update. Only six of the eleven have updated in 2019, with the last round of updates coming in May. It’s not a big deal, especially when the company drops a new scene every day, but if you’re going to advertise 11 extra sites, keep them up to date. Some of them haven’t been updated for years.

4) Terrible navigation

Vivid uses a slideshow button for navigation rather than pages, making it incredibly difficult to jump around the catalog. While there are thousands of videos to discover, the easiest way is to search and pray. It’s bizarre that there isn’t a simple browsing feature.

5) No 4K

Vivid has yet to adopt 4K video. While most of the site is in 1080p HD, if you’re a stickler for video quality in your modern porn, this might be a deal-breaker.

Is a Vivid membership worth it?

You have to respect how hard it must have been for Vivid to stay in business for over 30 years. It’s weathered every seachange in the industry—and learned along the way. It’s cool the company has embraced its history, creating a partial historical record of an industry that doesn’t get enough respect. Plus, it’s awesome porn. The incredible pace of content is also impressive, showing the company still has a gift for finding new talent.

Still, there are factors worth considering. Vivid still only shoots in 1080 HD. The site is a pain to use sometimes if you don’t know what you’re looking for. But the haphazard way Vivid treats its old porn is the biggest issue. Vivid has one of the largest libraries of classic porn on earth. It’s had the biggest stars and shot actual movies with great production value. Vivid.com could very easily be the Netflix of classic porn if it wanted. Instead, you get a selection of old clips and movies that leaves you wanting more. There’s enough to stay curious without satisfying your nostalgia.

The monthly cost of $33.97 is a lot to ask, but once you’re buying three months or more, the price of a Vivid membership is more than worth the content you get. Even if the site still has a long way to go, it’s one of the only sites with this content. Hopefully, Vivid will see the value of its old content and put more of it online.
