The Internet got divided by the latest viral math equation 8 ÷ 2(2+2) that appears to be quite a controversial one as people come up with different answers – 1 and 16.
Check out the correct answer and its explanation on Nexter.org.
Viral quiz showed how differently we are taught math
This thread was started by the Twitter user @pjmdolI that posted a pic from Naruto animated series with a math equation 8 ÷ 2(2 + 2).
Look like this is an easy one, but people came up with completely different answers – 1 and 16.
One user even typed the equation of the calculators and got different answers.
Another recorded a video with an explanation.

Some people had neither 1 nor 16 as an answer:

Our subscribers have also different opinions:
So, what’s the correct answer?
Fortunately, we have a person who explained this math equation. Twitter user @fcb_banter wrote: “You need to see the how bracket is created. There can be two cases:
- Case 1:
8 ÷ 2 x (2+2) = 8 ÷ 2 x 4 = 4 x 4 = 16
- Case 2 (Given case):
8 ÷ 2(2+2) = 8 ÷ 2(4) = 8 ÷ 8 = 1
“RULE is STEP-BY-STEP following of BODMAS (Bracket, Of, Divide, Multiply, Add, Subtract). Hope it helps!”
One more person added, “If you do PEMDAS, the answer is 1. If you do BEDMAS, the answer is 16”.
So, basically, if you studied the PEMDAS method (Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction) the answer is 1. But if you prefer BODMAS method (Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction) the answer is 16.
since part of the world teaches PEMDAS and part teaches BODMAS algebra can be quite confusing at times pic.twitter.com/UaXSPMwvYJ

That’s why we can say that both answers are correct. However, @bstpeach noted that the equation itself isn’t written appropriately: “Both 1 and 16 are correct answers because the notation of the equation is incorrect. Can everyone stfu now?”
